Never plead guilty

Listening (heavily) the past few to “The XX”, “Radio Dept” & “Al Green” [in no particular order]

Came across a great read yesterday.  All the better for it

Whats in your backpack

Your first ten thousand pictures are your worst- Henri Cartier-Bresson

Currently listening to: ” Dont u evah” by Spoon

Saw “Up in the Air” the other day and eye thought it was a very deliberate and excellent film. The former description a reference to the zeitgeist capturing motives of George Clooney & Co; the latter being the ensuing results (P.S: very well placed soundtrack)

Truly had a rousing good time and unequivocally my favorite broadway experience on Nov 28th!

Something to look forward to in February.

Umbro ‘Speciali’ Winners

This is about a month old but i enjoyed these Umbro competition entries. “After thousands of entries, here at Umbro we can unveil the finalists in our competition to customise the sole on a pair of Specialis. The response we had was amazing, with a fantastic range of designs from different ages and different countries around the world. These are the final 14, chosen from the thousands of different designs by a team of judges which included Umbro designers Stuart Semple and Stewart Scott-Curran, and Esquire’s art director David McKendrick. Initially we planned to have 11 winners, but the points system used by the judges to pick their favourites meant that we ended up with four designs tied in 11th place!”

High Glitz by Susan Anderson

Commercial photographer Susan Anderson crosses over to a fine-art career with her striking portraits from child beauty pageants. She has released a book and opened an exhibition featuring “tarted-up tots” with elaborate couture costumes, hair, and make up, Anderson explores the “high glitz” realm of child pageantry. I felt sick looking at these images, so i ‘guess’ the photographer did her job (not sure). The video (bottom of page) makes me feel otherwise…as they seem to be encouraging it.

FontShop at 20

FontShop turns 20 years old.

In 1989 Erik and Joan Spiekermann signed contracts with leading type foundries, packed their small office with floppy disks full of fonts, and started taking phone orders. FontShop became the first independent retailer of digital type. Twenty years later we’re still stocking the best fonts (though the number has grown and the medium has changed) and still answering phones.

Graphics by Nicholas Felton (who else could do this better?). See our interview with Nicholas.

It Is What It Is, Homie.

Our favorite design studio, 2×4, have released their book, stating:

“Portrait of a studio in 1000 images.
by 2×4, New York

it is what it is was published in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition at the Eye of Gyre gallery in Tokyo in 2009. The book features 1000 by-products from the life of a studio, un-narrated and crudely arranged along a typical design trajectory from the earliest concepts, sketches, doodles and diagrams through the process of making, modeling, producing and, finally, delivering work into the world. A blurry telling of a blurry story, it is what it is attempts to locate a master narrative in the chaotic, quotidian process of making design, and to reveal how what we think about evolves into what we make.”
Now available at iiwii.org.

Bodkin Brooklyn

Eco-conscience, Eviana Hartman, designs the Bodkin Brooklyn collection in accordance with the principles of sustainability in materials and production methods, while maintaining the fashion aesthetic required by the stylish modern woman. The name Bodkin comes from the early English name for a dagger, needle, or hairpin. Bodkin was recently featured in I.D. Mag (Nov. 09)…Watch Eviana briefly talk more about her company goals and its roots here. Our talented friend, Roanne Adams art directed the photo shoot for the Bodkin catalog.

Sarah Oppenheimer updates

Super artist, Sarah Oppenheimer updates her site with new works. Absolutely love her stuff!

“The focus of Sarah’s work is the feedback loop between constructed spaces and pedestrian motion. She studies how the built environment and human behavior reciprocally impact each other; most recently, the way that the visual progression of the human gaze is mapped by the contours of a given space. Sarah opens apertures in existing architectures, modifying the modular units that make up our standardized urban world. These apertures create new lines of sight within the space of display, and can function as both “holes” and “screens.”

Soft-Maps by Emily Fischer

Soft-Maps are quilted maps of cities and neighborhoods that represent someone’s unique place in the world. These quilts are meant to be used: wrap your children in them, have a picnic, pull them close during the next Nor’easter. Not only beautiful, these blankets can be used as a mnemonic tool. As your child grows up with a Soft Map, they learn to read their neighborhood and its landmarks in a tactile, easily remembered way. Emily Fischer

Font Suit – NBC vs. Font Bureau

Boston-based type foundry, Font Bureau, is seeking at least $2 million damages for unauthorized use of type fonts on Jay Leno and Saturday Night Live. Font Bureau alleges the broadcaster bought one software license yet widely distributed unauthorized copies of three fonts: Bureau Grotesque, Interstate and Antenna. The type designs are used in such highly visible programs as “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” “Saturday Night Live,” and “The Jay Leno Show.”

One has to wonder if design studio, Number 17 (designers of the Jimmy Fallon & SNL logos) has any part in lending.

Interview 02: Diana Al-Hadid

Our second interview is with contemporary artist/sculptor, Diana Al-Hadid. Diana was born in Syria in 1981 and raised in Ohio and now lives in Brooklyn, NY. She has an MFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a BFA in sculpture and a BA in Art History from Kent State University. She has been the focus of several solo exhibitions and international group exhibitions, including New York, Philadelphia, Berlin, London, Istanbul and Sharjah, UAE. Diana creates broad and spacious sculptures constructed from various mediums. The colossal-scale of her pieces articulate her concern with the architecture, mythology, theoretical technologies and the inevitable deterioration of ambitious human constructions. CNN Interview with Rem Koolhaas

Rem does a 3 part interview that discusses his hatred of the term ’starchitect’, contradictory times, journalism and current works in Asia, including one of my favorite OMA projects, the Seoul University building. Of course CNN shows Herzog & de Meuron’s Prada work instead of OMA’s. Silly kids.
